SEAD is part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) reponse to a call from President Obama to increase the use of science,  technology, and innovation to promote global development.

USAID developed the Higher Education Solutions Network, in which SEAD is a partner, to "harness the energy and idealism that exists in universities" and "focus the next generation of problem solvers on development's most vexing challenges ".

SEAD serves as a virtual hub for students interested in global health, international development, innovation and entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. SEAD strives to offer and connect students with opportunities that INSPIRE, ENGAGE, and allow students to INNOVATE, and contribute RESEARCH.
