Meet our HESN interns and get a peek into the work they are engaged in this summer:

Engagement Intern
Bureau for Economic Growth, Office of Education
Hannah Barton is an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Public Policy with a minor in Political Science and a certificate in Child Policy Research. Hannah will be interning with the Bureau of Economic Growth as an engagement intern. She will be helping the bureau to create and develop marketing materials such as fact sheets, social media engagement, and event assistance.

Entrepreneurship Program Analyst
US Global Development Lab, Global Partnerships Team
Kaylan Christofferson is a dual MPP/MBA candidate at the Sanford School of Public Policy and the Fuqua School of Business. This summer, Kaylan will be working with the Global Partnerships Team within USAID’s Global Development Lab. Most of her work will focus on the group’s Partnering to Accelerate Entrepreneurship (PACE) program, including analysis on the financial sustainability of different partnership models and the non-monetary value of the PACE network.

Innovation Scale-Up Intern
Bureau for Global Health, Center for Accelerating Innovation and Impact
Courtney Cobb is an MBA candidate at the Fuqua School of Business. Courtney will be working in the Center for Accelerating Innovation and Impact in the Global Health Bureau as the Innovations Scale-Up Intern conducting a market landscape analysis for a particular innovative medical technology/device. This will include field research in a few countries to identify market segments and demand, availability of complementary or substitute products, current treatment practices and programs, payment structure and willingness to pay, as well as the regulatory environment.

Saving Lives at Birth Intern
Bureau for Global Health, Center for Accelerating Innovation and Impact
Jaclyn Karasik graduated from Duke this May with a BS in Biology, a minor in Global Health, and a certificate in Genome Science and Policy. Congratulations, Jaclyn! She was also a member of the SEAD Student Advisory Council. Jaclyn will be working with Saving Lives at Birth to plan the DevelopmentxChange event which will take place in Washington DC July 26th-28th. The DevelopmentXChange is a critical component of the Saving Lives at Birth program, as it provides a forum for the Partners to interview and make final selections of expected award recipients as well as support the community of innovators working on treatment solutions for pregnant mothers and newborns during the vulnerable hours surrounding birth.
Data Analyst
Bureau for Food Security
Jennifer Lamy is Master of Engineering Management candidate at the Pratt School of Engineering. This summer Jennifer will be working as a data analyst for the Bureau for Food Security. She will be working with their Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) team to develop practical target setting guidance for Mission-led agriculture activities using the Feed the Future Monitoring System.

Data Analyst
US Global Development Lab, Center for Development Innovation “iDesign”
Natalie Lubin is an undergraduate student pursuing dual degrees in Global Health and Cultural Anthropology. This summer she will be working for the Center for Development Innovation “iDesign” team in the US Global Development Lab to help USAID with their Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) strategy by collecting data, analyzing, and improving methods for performance evaluation of USAID programs.

Sustainable Development and Education Intern
Bureau for Africa, Education Division
Anna Martin is a Master of Public Policy (MPP) student at the Sanford School of Public Policy. Anna will be working with the Bureau of Africa’s Sustainable Development and Education team to develop a plan for raising awareness on the specific educational needs for children living with disabilities in developing countries.

Saving Lives at Birth Intern

Sofia Stafford is an undergraduate student pursuing degrees in Cultural Anthropology and Global Health. Sofia will be working with the Saving Lives at Birth team to support the dynamic review process of global health innovators and help organize and implement the annual DevelopmentXChange event which will take place in Washington DC July 26th-28th. Global Innovation Exchange Advisor
US Global Development Lab, Applied Innovation and Acceleration Team
Will Walker is an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Economics with minors in English and Philosophy. He will be working with the Applied Innovation and Acceleration Team at the US Global Development Lab to help with the development of USAID’s recently built Global Innovation Exchange. Strategic Advisor for Research
US Global Development Lab, PEER
Mary Ziemba is an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Computer Science with a certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Mary will be working with the Partnerships for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) team at the US Global Development Lab to evaluate the performance of some USAID-funded research teams from low to middle-income countries who aim to create policy or tech-related innovations.
